The Times-Picayune: Oil Rig Explosion Leaves Sheen 1 Mile Long, Coast Guard Confirms

The Coast Guard is reporting the the Gulf oil rig explosion has left a sheen that is 100 feet wide and about a mile long, Chief Warrant Officer Barry Lane said. “We’re monitoring the oil sheen to make sure it’s not growing,” he said.
Lane said the Coast Guard has received reports from some of the crew members on the platform that the crew was able “to initiate shutdown procedures before the explosion.” He said those reports are still being confirmed.
